Toby Porter: Player Profile

Toby Porter: Player Profile

Joe Lynch27 Jul 2021 - 21:35

Have a read about the big dog's journey.

Toby is currently on his gap year. I’m sure when planning this year off he had dreamt of gracing the pitches of Australia and New Zealand with his medium pace, becoming a loyal lieutenant in the Barmy Army and getting in touch with his spiritual side on the beaches of Thailand. However, there would be no spiritual awakening for young Tobos this year, and he would not have the opportunity to display his bowling talent in the Southern Hemisphere. Instead he has become a crucial member of Nick Marsh’s ground staff and as such is trusted with some of the toughest assignments, for example on one occasion he had to be in Crawley for 8 am, it’s not quite Sydney, more like some kind of bizarre community service programme.

Toby’s inability to travel has meant he’s continued to be a valuable ever-present member at the club, as he has been for well over a decade. Having joined the club as a young buck back in ’08 Toby has represented the ideal progression of an EMCC player, from the age of six he's progressed through age group cricket and after beginning to play senior cricket when he was 12 he's continued to move up through the senior teams and is now a second Xl opening bowler. However, during his early years at the club it was not clear that it would be with the ball that Toby would have the greatest impact. With his grandfather a former Middlesex academy coach and his father a traditional top order batsman, Toby has had a rock solid traditional technique ingrained in him from a young age. In his early years Toby had a rigorous commitment to this solid technique but unfortunately his arms closely resembled cheese strings and thus he was unable to hit it off the square, hence the nickname ‘Test Match Toby’. But whilst his batting took a back seat his bowling grew from strength to strength and like Billy Elliot he broke away from the traditional familial role and instead has become a flamboyant swing bowler.

Toby’s increasing prowess on the field has been matched off it. Having graduated from buying jugs of J2O to jugs of lager in recent years Toby has already had his fair share of drinking mishaps in his short drinking career. In a recent drunken journey across London on ‘Boris Bikes’ Toby toppled on five separate occasions and at one stage rammed into his fellow medium pacer Josh Tomlinson in a clear attempt to injure the competition and further solidify his opening bowling spot in the second eleven.

Toby’s bowling continues to improve and he recently hit new heights with a 6fer against Sunbury 2nd Xl.

This talisman also captains the Under 21s side and has battled many a hangover in recent years to lead the boys out on a Sunday.

Toby is a vital member of the club and will be for years to come. I asked him some quick-fire questions to get a feel for who the fella really is.
