Our New President - Nigel Ross

Our New President - Nigel Ross

Sam Burge30 Jan 2023 - 09:32

Welcome our new President, Nigel Ross. Nigel takes over from his good friend Malcolm Lawford after 17 years of extraordinary leadership.

Introducing our new President, Nigel P.D. Ross. Roscoe had two years on the MCC Young Professional staff in 1971/2. He joined the same day as Ian Botham and Roland Butcher, whatever happened to them! It then followed a period of 5 seasons at Middlesex CCC, from 1973/77. Whilst he suffered several injuries, mainly broken fingers, he did however play in the County’s two Championship winning sides during this time, in 1976 and 1977, and has two County Championship trophies to his name.

He joined East Molesey, thanks to his great friend Malcolm Lawford, in 1978, and according to him, the Club helped him renew his love for game. He captained the Club from 1979 – 1981, a period of great playing success for the Club culminating in the Club’s first Surrey Championship win in 1980. He is also very proud of the Club’s Sunday record throughout his Captaincy. His and the team’s approach never changed regardless of whether it was league or friendly match.

During this period, he captained the Championship Inter league side, again winning the Inter League competition during his captaincy period, and losing another final over a 3 year period.

Travelling and work circumstances were becoming increasingly difficult, and he left the Club in 1983.

His passing summation about his Captaincy, his words, I took myself far too seriously, but fortunately we had some very strong characters in the side, who mostly allowed me to run the show I guess through curiosity, despite my antics, namely moving the field all the time, remaining quite loud and demonstrative and definitely over bowling myself. Nevertheless, my teams were loyal despite my own short comings.

We know Nigel is particularly honoured and chuffed to be asked to be President, particularly following his great friend, Malcolm Lawford, the conduit, and where his love affair with East Molesey all began.

Welcome home Roscoe!
